Football for Erasmus and international students in Budapest
Weekly pickup games near the BME and ELTE campuses and in central Pest, from 2,000 to 3,000 Ft a spot. Join on your own, in English, for one semester or five years.
You have just arrived in Budapest for a semester or a full degree. Lectures start, the flat is sorted, and you want to play football. The problem is that you do not have a team, you do not know where people play, and most pitches in the city are rented by the hour to groups that already exist. This guide shows how international and Erasmus students find a regular game in Budapest, what it costs and where to play near the main campuses.
Why pickup football works for students
A pickup game is already organised. A host books the pitch, sets the format and the price, and opens spots to players. You reserve one spot, turn up, and the teams are made on the day. There is no club to register with, no season fee and no need to bring nine friends.
That suits student life. Your timetable changes every semester, exams take over in January and June, and you may only be in the city for five months. With pickup football you play when you are free and skip the weeks you are not.
- No commitment: book one game at a time.
- Student-friendly price: usually 2,000 to 3,000 Ft per player, pitch included.
- Mixed groups: locals, international students and people who moved here for work play together.
- English on the pitch: many games are played in English, so you do not need Hungarian.
Where to play near your campus
Most international students live and study either on the Buda side around Újbuda or in the inner districts of Pest. There is a regular PitchUp venue close to both.
Újbuda (XI.): BME Sporttelep
BME Sporttelep on Bogdánfy utca (1117) is the busiest pickup venue on PitchUp and sits right next to the BME and ELTE campuses at Lágymányos. Games run several times a week, mostly 5v5 and 6v6 on artificial turf, often in the evening after lectures. A spot costs 2,000 to 3,000 Ft and games last 60 to 90 minutes. If you study engineering, science or IT on the Buda side, this is your home pitch.
BME Sporttelep games →Central Pest (VI.): Városliget Mini Arena
Városliget Mini Arena on Városligeti fasor (1068) is the closest regular venue to central Pest. It hosts 6v6 games on floodlit turf, usually at 2,000 Ft. If you live in the V., VI., VII. or VIII. district, it is the easiest game to reach after class.
Városliget Mini Arena games →Buda hills (II.): Panoráma Sportközpont
Panoráma Sportközpont at Kolozsvári Tamás utca 11 (1023) hosts weekend games, including full 11v11 matches on a big pitch. It has changing rooms, showers, parking, floodlights and a café. It is the place to go if you miss playing eleven-a-side.
All pitches in Budapest →How to join your first game
- Open the app or the web app and filter by day and format: 5v5, 6v6 or 11v11.
- Tap a match to see the venue, surface, price, host and who has already joined.
- Reserve your spot in one tap. You get a reminder before kick-off.
- Bring cash for now: you pay the host at the venue. Card payments are coming soon.
If a game is full, join the waitlist. When a player cancels, the next person on the waitlist can take the spot. If your plans change, cancel from My bookings so someone else can play.
First game with strangers? Here's what to expect →What to bring
- Boots for the surface: most small-sided games are on artificial turf, so turf shoes or short studs work best.
- Shin pads, if you normally wear them.
- Water and a light and a dark top, in case there are no bibs.
- Cash for the host, in forints.
Making friends beyond your faculty
Student life can stay inside one bubble: your course, your flatmates and the same international group every weekend. A weekly game breaks that. You play with Hungarians, people working in the city and students from other universities, and you see the same faces every week.
After each match, players vote for the MVP, and your player card and rating grow with your games. It is a small thing, but it gives you a reason to come back next week.
How MVP votes and player ratings work →Playing through the winter semester
From November it is dark before 5 pm and cold in the evenings. Look for floodlit pitches: Városliget Mini Arena, Budapest Garden FC in Zugló and Panoráma Sportközpont all have floodlights. Most turf games keep running all winter, so you do not need to stop when the weather turns.

Once you have a few regular teammates, enter a tournament. Hosts run leagues and cups across Budapest, and solo players can sign up: the host places you in a team. It is a good way to end a semester with a trophy, or at least a story.

Can I play if I am only here for one semester?

Can I organise games for my own student group?
