Play football in Városmajor: free and floodlit pitches

Városmajor is the park on the Buda side, just behind Széll Kálmán tér in the XII. district. It has two very different ways to play football. There is a free concrete pitch in the park, open to anyone with a ball. And there is Városmajori focipálya, a floodlit artificial-turf pitch where PitchUp hosts run organised 5v5 games. This guide covers both.

Városmajori focipálya: organised games on turf

This is the pitch for a proper game. It is artificial turf with floodlights, so it works on dark winter evenings. It is also one of the best-equipped venues PitchUp hosts use, with changing rooms, showers, parking and drinking water.

The free concrete pitch in the park

Városmajor also has a classic concrete football pitch that is free to use. Funzine, which listed it among Budapest's free ball-game spots in 2025, says it is busy until late in the evening. There is no booking and no organiser: whoever is there plays.

• Players: bring your own friends and ball. Nobody guarantees a game.

Opening times, lighting and the size of the pitch aren't posted in an official source we could find, so check on site. Wear trainers or turf shoes on concrete, not studs.

Which one should you choose?

• Choose the free pitch if you already have a group and a ball, and just want a casual kickabout.
• Choose Városmajori focipálya if you are on your own, want a full game with set teams and a start time, or want a shower afterwards.

Many players use both: a kickabout with friends on the concrete at the weekend, and a booked 5v5 on the turf during the week.

Who it suits

Városmajor is the natural venue for anyone living or working in the XII. district, around Széll Kálmán tér, Krisztinaváros or the inner Buda districts. If you are further south in Buda, BME Sporttelep in Újbuda and Panoráma Sportközpont in the II. district are the other regular PitchUp venues on the Buda side.
