Budapest has football on both sides of the Danube every day of the week. The hard part used to be finding a game with space for you: most pitches are rented by the hour to groups who already have ten friends. This guide covers every way to play in the city, from pickup games you can join alone to leagues and full 11v11, and how to book a spot tonight.

Four ways to play football in Budapest

  • Pickup games: a host books the pitch and opens spots to anyone. You join alone or with a friend, and teams are made on the day. This is what PitchUp is built for.
  • Renting a pitch: you book a pitch for an hour and bring your own players. Good if you already have a group.
  • Amateur leagues and cups: teams play a fixture list or a knockout. You need a team, or you can sign up solo for tournaments that place you in one.
  • Clubs: amateur and expat clubs train and play in regional leagues. A bigger commitment, usually with membership fees.

Choose your format

  • 5v5: 10 players on a small pitch. Lots of touches, short bursts of running, ideal after work.
  • 6v6: 12 players. The most common pickup format in Budapest, with a bit more space for passing.
  • 11v11: 22 players on a full-size pitch with real positions, usually at weekends.

Where the games are

PitchUp games run at venues across the city. On the Buda side, BME Sporttelep on Bogdánfy utca in Újbuda (XI.) is the busiest, with 5v5 and 6v6 several times a week. Panoráma Sportközpont in the II. district hosts weekend games, including 11v11, and has changing rooms, showers and a café.

On the Pest side, Városliget Mini Arena (VI.) is the closest regular venue to the centre, with 6v6 on floodlit turf. Budapest Garden FC in Zugló (XIV.) and the ÚTE Sport Centre in Újpest (IV.) cover the east and north.

Turf or grass

Most small-sided games are on artificial turf, which plays the same in any weather and stays usable all winter. Grass pitches are more common for 11v11. The surface is shown on every match in the app, so you can bring the right boots: short studs or turf shoes for turf, firm-ground studs for grass.

What it costs

On PitchUp a spot costs 2,000 to 3,000 Ft depending on the venue and format. The host sets the price and you see it in forints before you book. You pay the host in cash at the venue for now; card payments and the PitchUp Wallet are coming soon.

Join a game, not a group chat

On PitchUp you see open games near you with the time, price, host and players already in. Tap a match, reserve your spot and get a reminder before kick-off. No chasing numbers, no group chats that never agree on a time.

Playing through the winter

From November it is dark before 5 pm, so look for floodlit or indoor pitches. Most turf games keep running all winter.
