Winter football in Budapest: floodlit and indoor pitches

Keep playing through the cold months on covered, heated and floodlit pitches.

Budapest winters are cold and get dark early, but the football does not stop. From November it is dark before 5 pm and temperatures often sit around or below zero, so plenty of games move under floodlights or onto turf that stays playable when grass is frozen or muddy. Here is how to keep playing until spring.

What to look for in a winter pitch

  • Floodlights: essential from November for any game after work.
  • Artificial turf: drains well and plays the same in most weather, so games are rarely called off.
  • Covered or indoor pitches: out of the wind, rain and snow.
  • Changing rooms and showers: worth a lot when it is below zero.

Winter-friendly venues on PitchUp

Several PitchUp venues have floodlights: Városliget Mini Arena (VI.), Budapest Garden FC in Zugló (XIV.), the ÚTE Sport Centre in Újpest (IV.) and Panoráma Sportközpont (II.). Budapest Garden FC, ÚTE and Panoráma also have changing rooms and showers, and Panoráma has a café for a warm drink afterwards. Facilities are listed on every pitch page.

Dress for the cold

  • A base layer under your shirt, ideally long-sleeved.
  • Gloves and a hat for the warm-up and for goalkeepers.
  • Warm, dry clothes for afterwards, so you are not standing around in a sweaty shirt.
  • A flask of something hot if the venue has no café.

Look after your body

Cold muscles tear more easily, and turf gets hard in frost. Warm up properly for ten minutes before kick-off: jog, stretch dynamically and do a few short sprints. Keep tackles on your feet, because falling on frozen turf hurts.

Keep the habit going

Winter is when weekly games lose players, which is good news for you: it is easier to get a spot. Keep booking the same slot and you will come out of winter with a regular squad and better fitness than most.
